Writing Long vs. Typing
By Rudy Hiebert
Writing for me began in the second grade, with a pen, knibb and ink well. I had thought I had died and gone to heaven when I was given this strange combination of writing tools. The next thing I remember was the correct way of writing. It had a name, "MacLean Method of Writing". The teacher was as old as the school bell but she knew how to communicate the skill. The knibbed pen soon gave way to experimenting with a goose feather. The words did not flow any easier but it was fun to role play how it must have felt writing with a candle on the rough table in a cabin. The next phase saw the Bic take over and hopefully more intelligent compositions in the form of essays and numbers. Nearing the end of my basic education, which somehow comes and goes, I took a typing class with the Underwood typewriter, an amazing machine. Where has the time gone? We were taught how to use all ten fingers and the minimum to pass was twenty words per minute; I achieved twenty-one. White-out didn't count. How can we say that the human race is evolving to a higher level when we have come to using only our two thumbs on a thing called a "Black Berry". Some of us still use a keyboard and monitor. I won't admit to how many fingers I use but as long as my brain is connected to my hands I prefer this to dipping my pen into an ink well and never going without a blotter.
