Why I Called 911
By Rudy Hiebert
My commitments at the time got me out of the house but this time I should have been home. My cell phone seldom rang but when it did it was usually important and this time was that time. The first time it rang my wife's voice was calling in a desperate voice that she was in trouble. I knew from the few words I could make out I needed to drop everything and high tail it home. While on the way it rang again, but this time I heard the smoke alarm in the background and more desperate pleas for help. I had a notion it was her hip replacement had become displaced again. I was right. When I arrived home, I could see a fire truck, ambulance and a police squad car. That didn't look good. I was approached by a fire crew and policeman at the garage door I just opened with my remote. Their first words were something like, "If you had arrived two minutes later we would have busted down your door". I could see smoke in the kitchen and my wife lying on the floor. After the ambulance crew had attended to her she explained how this happened. The faithful wife she is, she had been cooking pork chops on the stove but had made a move that displaced her hip. All that was left for her to do was lay down on the floor. Not being able to reach the wall mounted phone, she slid along the laminate floor to where her purse was perched and use her cell phone. In the mean time the pork chops where burning to a burnt offering, creating the source of the smoke. When firemen see smoke building to a three foot depth from the kitchen ceiling they don't think twice about making their next move. Within minutes all was under control and she was heading to the emergency of the hospital. Fortunately the situation was not life threatening. The garage door remained open and all the windows on the opposite side of the house cleared the air. The police felt that a conversation with me in the garage would help them understand the background of how this came about. I assumed they were piecing the puzzle together to see if I was OK or if I needed to be taken away. That would also not be a good experience.

Contributor's Note
Hip replacements are an increasing event. After some research I learned about the "Birmingham" procedure; wish we had known about that the first time.
