What does it take to downsize from townhouse to condo?

By Rudy Hiebert

Downsizing from a townhouse with two floors and double garage to a condo with everything on one floor, storage locker and underground garage seems a bit of stretch. That stretch involves a bit of hoarding therapy and seeing the benefits of unloading the unnecessary. Needless to say, organization is also key.

The garage and storage locker is my territory and the "house" is run by my wife. Fortunately we have ample closets, which I think one should add if it doesn't already exist. We had a medium sized deep freeze in the garage but no space or use for it in the new place. A second fridge in the laundry room with a freezer drawer solved that. This created a good place for those beverages that come in handy at Stanley Cup and Grey Cup games. Oh yes, those made ahead-of-time snacks for the meet & greet and open house occasions.

Our home office has a desk the length of the room. There is ample room for both PC's and a printer. We found the components at a commonly known European big box store. With a filing cabinet the same height it provides luxurious elbow room to work. There's a lap top in here somewhere, just have to find it.

Any organizing that involves furniture needs to correlate with the necessary technology outlets. If that isn't possible, you may have to rely on power cords but don't overload them as they will eventually reach their limit.

I do not recommend color coding of your socks but organizing the wardrobe in such a way that it makes sense in a seasonal rotation will help to keep items like slacks and shirts current. I am reminded that shirts and pants do wear out and just need to taken to the dumpster. If there is some consolation to taking such items to a thrift store where they can be re-purposed for charity and if it makes you feel good, do that but living lighter works. I need to be reminded once in a while, we can't take it with us.
