My Dentist and I By Rudy Hiebert From the first appointment after moving to our town, I knew we were a team. Over the next couple years, his inquisitive questioning about my life in general and how I was wired occupied our first few minutes at each visit. As you can imagine, it’s challenging to communicate effectively when the dentist is waiting with syringe in hand ready to give me a shot of Novocain. Communicating with my dentist evolved as my dental needs progressed. As you can imagine, I suspected him of drilling for dollars as he picked his way around one side of my pearly whites, which incidentally where not as white as they should be. After all, tea and coffee have part of my life for a few years. As time progressed, there were appointments when I was tempted to rocket out of the chair never to return. He didn’t make this suggestion but I take credit for being creative to make life easier while getting these experiences more enjoyable and productive for myself as well as my dentist. He gave permission to ask for more pain killer. We agreed to communicate this request with a hand signal that simulated the use of the syringe. The other hand signal was the use of the suction apparatus with a curved finger. Dentist Dragmir-Ene has a sense of humor that stands him in good stead when it’s needed. He wondered if I was familiar with the middle finger solute, which I could also use if necessary. His staff members are like friends to our family and never fail to ask about the grandchildren, vacations and the health of my wife. We are indeed fortunate to have such people in our circle.
